The forgotten is a piece that makes tribute and speaks in the name of the Sea, of the humans that put their lives in risk to follow their dreams and of ownership and belonging. It originated as fruit of an encounter at Sea, sailing the Mediterranean coats waters of Mallorca, next to the island of Cabrera, where we saw and approached an empty vessel, that had been used to cross African immigrants to Spain.
The vessel was filled with left behind life jackets, personal belongings of the immigrants and empty gasoline containers and there was still a sensation of deep fear and anguish filling the remains and space. At that moment a swordfish jumped out of the water, making a big, blunt splash.
This experience touched me deeply and made me think of the issue of borders, countries and humans wanting to take ownership of the earth and it’s seas. I created three flags:
A blue textile flag, dyed blue with natural indigo, standing for the Sea as a global sovereign independent territory, which should be respected as such, more than having to be protected by treaties of marine conservation or powerful nation ruled economical interests.
A flag composed by long threads dyed with natural indigo, as in tears for lost life and lives.
A flag composed by a life vest, for all those humans who have given up their home land and in many cases their lives.
