The Forgotten is a tribute to the Sea, to the humans who risk their lives in pursuit of their dreams, and to the deeper questions of ownership and belonging.

It was born from an encounter at sea, while sailing the Mediterranean waters off Mallorca, near the island of Cabrera. There, we came upon an empty vessel — one that had been used to carry African migrants across to Spain. It was filled with abandoned life jackets, personal belongings, and empty gasoline containers, the space still heavy with a sense of fear and anguish. At that moment, a swordfish leapt from the water, breaking the surface with a single, blunt splash.

That encounter stayed with me. It brought me back to questions of borders, nations, and the human desire to claim ownership over the earth and its seas. From it, these three flags emerged:

A blue flag, dyed with natural indigo, representing the Sea as a sovereign, independent territory — one that deserves respect in its own right, not only through treaties of marine conservation or the economic interests of powerful nations.

A flag made of long threads, dyed in the same natural indigo, like tears — for lives lost, and lives left behind.

A flag made from a life jacket, in honor of all those who have given up their homeland, and in many cases, their lives.

The Forgotten es un homenaje al mar, a las personas que arriesgan sus vidas en pos de sus sueños y a las cuestiones más profundas sobre la propiedad y la pertenencia.

Surgió de un encuentro en el mar, mientras navegábamos por las aguas del Mediterráneo frente a Mallorca, cerca de la isla de Cabrera. Allí nos topamos con una embarcación vacía, una de las que se habían utilizado para transportar a migrantes africanos hasta España. Estaba llena de chalecos salvavidas abandonados, efectos personales y bidones de gasolina vacíos; el espacio aún estaba cargado de una sensación de miedo y angustia. En ese momento, un pez espada saltó del agua, rompiendo la superficie con un único y sordo chapoteo.

Ese encuentro se me quedó grabado. Me hizo volver a plantearme cuestiones sobre las fronteras, las naciones y el deseo humano de reclamar la propiedad de la tierra y sus mares. De ahí surgieron estas tres banderas:

Una bandera azul, teñida con índigo natural, que representa el mar como un territorio soberano e independiente —uno que merece respeto por derecho propio, no solo a través de tratados de conservación marina o de los intereses económicos de las naciones poderosas—.

Una bandera hecha de largos hilos, teñidos con el mismo índigo natural, como lágrimas: por las vidas perdidas y las que quedan atrás.

Una bandera confeccionada con un chaleco salvavidas, en honor a todos aquellos que han renunciado a su patria y, en muchos casos, a sus vidas.
