Artists for Fundació Amazonia

This group exhibition in Xavier Fiol Gallery will last only
for a couple of days as it is a fundraising for Fundació Amazonia.
My piece is a papercut with a little fish and an old Mexican quote:
“Oh Pez, pececillo dorado,
¡Ten mucho cuidado!
Son muchas las redes y trampas que te tiende este mundo.”

“Oh Fish, little golden fish,
Be aware!
There are many nets and traps set for you in this world.”

Textures of Time

I confess, I do not believe in time.”
Vladimr Nabokov

Vladimir Nabokov: “I confess I do not believe in time. I like to fold my magic carpet, after use, in such a way as to superimpose one part of the pattern upon another. Let visitors trip. And the highest enjoyment of timelessness – in a landscape selected at random – is when I stand among rare butterflies and their food plants. This is ecstasy, and behind the ecstasy is something else, which is hard to explain. It is like a momentary vacuum into which rushes all that I love. A sense of oneness with sun and stone. A thrill of gratitude to whom it may concern – to the contrapuntal genius of human fate or to tender ghosts humoring a lucky mortal.”

Hand, paper & blade

Sharpness of blade is very important while doing a papercut. Some people use small scissors but you need to work with very fine paper. For specific works I use high-density polyethylene fiber sheets which make the tip of the blade become blunt a little faster than on regular paper. Therefore I have to change blades quite often.
It is amazing to see how the drawing on the paper transforms little by little into something… almost alive.

My paper dolls

I want to introduce you to Annekatrin, Lisa & Ana the paper dolls I was playing with at my childhood. I discovered these toys in a drawer at my parent’s summer house. While opening the boxes so many memories came back to me… I could remember perfectly all their outfits and looks. The funny thing is that I did not know about the existence of these dolls anymore, but if you look at some of my artwork they must have been somehow present in my subconscious…

Begining a new stage

This is the creative incubator and workshop space where I will work not only on my own but also through collabortive practice to experience together art, crafts, history, design or any cultural expression and to create a space where knowledge and innovation melt through creative process giving shape to something new.
I will keep you informed through this blog about events, workshops and more.

Mixed feelings

Today I have left my old studio in Palma where I have been working since 1999.

For everything you have missed, you have gained something else, for everything you gain, you lose something else.”

Dinner for two

A new series of papercuts I am working on after dinner.

Neurons in Es Baluard Museum

My recent collaboration with Insula Teatro for the summer nights programm of the Es Baluard Museum was a challenge. I had designed a big papercut membrane representing a neuron forest that had to be hung up without using any nails and drilling any holes into the museum walls.

The papercut was composed by 6 polyethylene fiber screens (each 6 - 7 m tall) that should work as a projection screen for the visual images I had created for this play based on three works of Edgar Allan Poe: The Black Cat, The Cask of Amontillado and The Oval Potrait. I draw and cut out a hybrid neuron forest on this paper screen to emphasize the neuroscientific characteristics of Poe’s work and words.

I also ment to create with these screens a link between the musicians of the elcteronic music group Neo Tokyo that were playing life for this multidisciplinar event and the action and tension developing on the stage.

….and the final result was this:

My very special thanks to Ignacio, Adriana and Julia for your help.
The pictures of the set up were taken by Jordi from Neo Tokyo. Thanks for that!

On a white paper roll

I am working on a theater set design for the upcoming show “Horror scenes/ Escenas de terror“, inspired in short stories by Edgar Allan Poe which will be performed at the Es Baluard Museum in Palma de Mallorca during their summer night programm next July 9th, 2010.
This big white sufrace is going to be transformed into a hybrid neuron forest and will be the stage background and also a big projection area for digital images that I created for this multidisciplinar theater show.

Getting ahead

It is taking like always more time than expected…but with patience we will make this place look again like it should. We discovered a nice iron column in the centre of the space which was covered with plaster. It came back to live!

Madreselva

This type of honeysuckle ( Lonicera implexa ) grows in the forest next to my house.
It climbs over other plants and protects them as well as the animals from outer agressions.
The ovate leaves have transparent edges and the upper ones grow united surrounding the stem…like a little casserole. The flowers look very delicate with their tubular shape and pink, yellow and white shades. They are pretty ephemeral in a flower vase, but very poetic.

Origami in green

It took some time and many folds to create the flowers for Emiliy’s garden.
Don’t they say when it comes to gardening patience is a virtue?

My new studio

My new studio…one day

In a close future this will be my new workspace and studio.
It will take some time to convert this night- bar into a clean & neat space.
The building, buit in 1910, is located in the neighbourhood of Santa Catalina and Es Jonquet, an old fishermens’s quarter. I can’t wait to move in there with my paper and scissors…!
